Zara dress (similar) (last worn here), Zara clearance shirt (similar), House of Harlow tote, Mango clearance heels (similar),garage sale/ Forever 21/ Amrita Singh bracelets
This is what I wore to the Project Runway Finale Show and to work that entire day before the event. I didn't know how formal the attire would be at the event so I wore something that could be easily transformed from casual (with the shirt) to dressy (without the shirt).
I love this shirt so much I contemplated on getting two but decided that would be very economically unwise of me at this time. I can imagine myself pairing it with slouchy wide-legged pants, as a jacket over both casual and dressy tops/dresses, or tucked into a high-waisted skirt. I also want to get some vintage gold brooches from flea markets to pin on to the shirt.

The next portion of this post ties together a few thoughts and decisions that have been on my mind for the past few months. I was initially reluctant to write this post because I thought no one would care to read it. However, I've received a few emails and questions about my current job and my future career path, so here's the post addressing some of those questions.
Marie Claire, LOFT, Rimmel: As some of you may know, I've been given a very unique opportunity this summer courtesy of Marie Claire due to winning the first ever Front Row Challenge last year. For the past two weeks I got to work on independent projects under Marie Claire as well as talk to some of the brightest minds in the industry...from the MC beauty editors to the MarieClaire.com editors to the publisher. The girls at Marie Claire have really taken me under their wing to make sure I learn and have fun as much as I could. My day-by-day experiences will be up on MarieClaire.com soon. Next week I will be working at LOFT...and the week after that I will be at Rimmel London. I think the biggest eye-opener has been the realization of just how much work and how many people stand behind every published issue. As a nerd I thoroughly enjoyed learning the "business" portion of the fashion business.
Career/ school plans: I've decided to attend Brooklyn Law with the intention to go into Fashion Intellectual Property Law in the future. Brooklyn Law has generously offered me a full ride scholarship plus living stipend to attend there...which I'm VERY thankful for since I am living on my own means. This is a huge leap from my original plans of attending graduate school for chemical engineering. All my life both my parents and I assumed that I was getting a Ph.D in science because both my parents are scientists. As you can imagine, I had a bit of an identity crisis when I realized that perhaps graduate school was not the right fit for me. Then, me finding out that there is actually a field (Fashion IP Law) that combines demand for analytical thinking, requirement for a science/engineering bachelor's degree, and preference for fashion experience was too timely to seem coincidental. After many nervous breakdowns, crying spells, fingernail biting episodes, and advice from established lawyers, I finally solidified my decision on where to attend law school (and whether I would attend law school at all.) Thus, my move to the NYC area is a permanent one. My family and friends are still in Austin so I'll still be frequenting Texas! In fact, I will be there in between my fashion internships and law school.
General musings: I am always surprised when I find out people actually read my ramblings...this realization is both heart-warming and scary at the same time. Thank you to all loyal readers that have stuck with my crappy writing and sporadic posting. Thank you to anyone that has ever emailed me to ask about random topics I've mentioned on my blog...like about Bollywood song recommendations or the graduate school debate. I will try my best to keep updating my blog while in NYC to chronicle my juggling of law school and styling/fashion projects. Although I will try to update around 2-4 times a week, this blog will remain primarily a hobby so my posts might still remain sporadic.
*Note: for those of you that are still reading, I will be updating my blog more often now that I'm settled in and found a work/errand/play schedule that works.*

DeleteSo exciting! Wishing all the best on the next leg of your adventure... Looking forward to your reports.
ReplyDeleteDiya, congratulations on everything amazing you've been accomplishing! I definitely believe that following a path that combines many of your interests and talents is a great way to go...speaking as someone who went into college thinking I'd be a classics major and do theater on the side, randomly took a computer science class, and somehow ended up majoring in computer science and theater and going on to do a Ph.D. program where I'm basically studying new technologies for theater performance. It's a great mix of many of my interests, takes advantage of my background, and I can certainly say (4 years into the program) that I'm doing exactly what I should be doing. So it's just awesome that you're following what interests you and figuring out how to bring many of those interests together! Best of luck on these next adventures.
ReplyDelete(Also, had to say that your dress is amazing!)
Whoa...new technologies for theater performance? That sounds SUPER cool. Thanks Elly for the encouragement!

ReplyDeleteThanks Tiffany! :)
DeleteWow, I sound so formal in this post...
ReplyDeleteThanks everyone for the well wishes!
Congratulations on your Marie Claire internship and on law school! Ever since I started working for a local magazine, I've thought about going back to journalism for a career, but I'm not sure how to get started.
ReplyDeleteI'm not the best person to ask about this since I didn't arrive at this point in a traditional way nor am I interested in the journalism portion of the fashion industry.
DeleteHowever from my chats with people at the magazine, it does seem that you're just supposed to send your resumes to the departments you're interested in working for. Even if they don't have a job opening that fits at the moment, send your resume with a note like "I'm really interested in working for (your company). I know that (your company) doesn't have a spot open at the moment but please keep me in mind if one does." Sending one to the HR department too doesn't hurt. If your resume is amazing they will definitely keep you in mind.
Wow! Congratulations hun. Best of luck. :)
ReplyDeleteI've missed being able to view your posts my blog got deleted. I love your blog.Definitely following now! Check out my new blog and stay in touch! xx

Lovely outfit! I'm glad you found your passion, I recently changed my major so I can pursue fashion. It was stressful and frustrating and it's probably not what everyone else wants for me. But it's what I want for me, which is the most important thing.
ReplyDeleteCongrats!

ReplyDeleteI love this post so much and can totally relate. I spent months contemplating life after college back in 2010 and I feel like it's a rough patch most post-grad students go through and definitely teaches you so much about LIFE and what's out there in this world.

Your story actually made me cry! This must be such an incredible time in your life! I am bookmarking this for inspiration!
ReplyDeletecongrats! i am just starting college and am unsure what path i want to take. i decided on going to school for fashion design and i know in the future i want to do fashion for a cause because i want to help people. but i am also unsure whether i should just do journalism/investigative reporting because im super passionate about it. still deciding what to do. im trying out the fashion program for a year and if i dont feel that im passionate about it i will do journalism because my heart is completley torn between the two.
ReplyDeleteI found your blog just now, and I can already tell it's a very unique one. congratulations on your opportunities and good luck in school! I had no idea there was a major that combined science+ fashion, but that sounds like a challenging and amazing route to pursue:)
