Forever 21 everything (except Asos clearance striped top)
I obviously went a bit pattern-crazy on this outfit. The summer heat and the need to mix things up does strange things to me. I also didn't realize how almost everything I'm wearing is from various seasons of forever21 until I started writing this post. Oops. All the more reason for me to stay away from that store and do more thrifting. I've been moving, studying, research, and had an exam on my birthday (first time I've had to go to school on my birthday, much less exam, since it's always summertime) so I haven't posted as often as I'd like but I've taken the facebook page votes on what type of posts you'll like to see more into consideration and will try to bring my DSLR with me more.
Oh, I wish I knew more about this but I won THIS Marie Claire contest and thus a trip to NYC to meet with the Marie Claire team as well as get to host a fashion show at UT. Any recommendations on where I should visit in NYC? I've loved St Mark's Place, Soho & Chinatown but I feel like there's a few more places I should be visiting....

Congrats on the contest! Why not scope LB for NYers to give you the insider's tour?
ReplyDeleteNot judging, just asking: does it bother you that Forever21 and Urban Outfitters flat-out steal so many of their designs from young, independent designers, then dare them to sue? I'm really stuck between liking that there are low-cost stylish options and hating that they are straight up stealing from creative people who can't afford to mount a legal challenge to the theft. It's a drag.
How super cute are all those dotted patterns?! And congrats on winning the contest to NYC, you will have a blast.

Keeperdesign: Yes it bothers me a lot. This is half f21's fault and half the manufacturers' (that also sell to places like modcloth, lulu's, charlotte russe, aritiza, necessary clothing, yesstyle, etc etc) fault. However, if f21 paid for people to design everything from scratch it would no longer be affordable...and I kind of like the democratization of fashion. I guess I feel like most of the people that would go into f21 would probably not buy that same design from YSL or Nicola Kirkwood. I don't like f21's ethics, but where else am I supposed to shop when basically all affordable places steal designer's idea? Thrift is a good answer, which is why I've been shopping there a bit more but I don't have the time to shop in brick-and-mortar stores since most of the time I get out of research and class around 8-11pm at night and have to catch up on studying during the weekend. Online shopping's easier, and there's no "thrift stores" online...

ReplyDeleteAnd I recommend the museum of sex :P It sounds odd at first (and the lobby is certainly bizarre) but it's an interesting experience. It's a bit overpriced but might as well check it out. Haha.
If you could get tickets to the Daily Show or the Colbert Report, I recommend those too! :D Going to the Daily Show was such a fun experience. Eeeep I'm so excited for you!

congrats on winning the contest! I love the pattern mixing here, it's makes a casual outfit more stylish. I have to make a conscious effort to avoid wearing all F21 but at times those pieces all work best together. Here-here to thrifting more, retailing less.

I am a fan of forever 21. Sometimes I go out decked head to toe in forever 21. I don't so that intentionally, of course, it's just that most of my clothes are from forever 21. Anyway, I love the pattern mix of this outfit, Diya. And congratulations on winning that contest! I'm sure you're gonna have loads of fun in NYC.
