Nothing much to say except I might be changing my decision on Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering and go towards working in industry and ultimately an engineering management position? I just talked to a couple people and realized academia or research & development aren't for an absent-minded goofball like me...
I apparently have been using the wrong lens for my camera for what I wanted to do with my photos the entire time. This is what happens when I don't read the directions/tutorials and insisting on bumbling around by myself.

ReplyDeleteI know what you mean, I planned on Grad school but I'm so sick of school I just want to start in the industry already. Best of luck with whatever you decide :]
Rach, what IS your current industry right now? I thought it's now artist??
ReplyDeleteWow, that is a big decision. Good luck making it.
ReplyDeleteLove this outfit already added it as an inpiration to my list.

Haha, Diya, my degree is in animation so I do a lot of art on the side. There is an animation grad program here that is pretty intense. But I'm so tired of school already, you know?
ReplyDeleteAll the dealing with fulfilling requirements, battling for classes, and all nighters is wearing me out. I don't know how you do your major, I'd be so overwhelmed!
i love this look..color combination is so lovely. love tht jacket !

Diya,
ReplyDelete"I apparently have been using the wrong lens for my camera for what I wanted to do with my photos the entire time."
Never blame the lens if your photography skills aren't amazing. The lens is never wrong. You just have to learn more on how to manage your depth of field. FYI, bad editing doesn't help the photos too.
I have been using the same lens for the past 3 years and I can still manage to work the depth of field, manually.
"This is what happens when I don't read the directions/tutorials and insisting on bumbling around by myself."
Photography isn't something that can be learnt through books. You have to explore the camera yourself in order to understand. Play with it too (a lot). At least learn it from someone who has handled a DSLR more often.

Anna,
ReplyDeleteI just meant that I probably should have been using the teloscopic lens instead of wide angle for the effect I wanted in my pictures...
Seriously, that blazer is amazing! I love it paired with that pretty lace dress and tights!
ReplyDeleteSmall Time Style
Diya,
ReplyDeletein your photos, i can see what effects you are trying to apply. blurry background right? that's called a depth of field by the way.
You do not need a telescopic lens to get an effect. Are you trying to outfit shots from miles away? Kit lens can just do that. Portrait lens will also help and it's the best if you want the depth of field!
As I said, learn it from friends.
Hrm.... yeah blurry background was what I'm trying to apply (but failing) and it said on some video that telescopic lenses make the effect much more pronounced? right now the camera is placed pretty close to me...
ReplyDeleteI haven't read much about portrait lens. Are they expensive? right now I have 1 telescopic and 1 wide angle...
Wow, I envy you for that lace dress! And the blazer is indeed amazing! Love velvet myself. For what you are trying to achieve you need a 50 mm lens and f 1.8, that's the lowest I think. I am trying to get those lenses myself.
ReplyDeleteGood luck with your decision!
Diya,
ReplyDeletedon't believe the videos. Portrait lens are affordable. Check online. My friends and I have been using portrait lens this past few years, and it works well for the depth of field effect. It doesn't really matter what lens you have. it's the photographer. If your pictures are horrible, don't blame the lens, please.
Google portrait lens.
Anna,
ReplyDeleteyeah neither the bf nor I have any kind of training in photography (obviously) but I'm trying to learn...slowly though since I'm usually busy with school.
Would you recommend manual focus always? or?
OH my goodness these photos are straight from a magazine! Amazing!
ReplyDeleteI really love your dress. I'm obsessed with lace and the jacket is awesome. Such a great contrast in texture!
ReplyDeleteMy husband is a water systems engineer and was thinking about going back and getting a specific Chemical Engineering degree since he likes it so much and is interested in more than the hydrology side of things, but realized he could move up through his company without it and read about his passions on the side. I say do whatever makes you happy! :)
This outfit has to be one of my favorites that you have put together recently. SO cute and the color of the jacket with the neutral of the dress, the textures, etc. are really spectacular!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous outfit! That blazer and color looks amazing on you! :)
ReplyDeleteHey Diya,
ReplyDeleteWas reading the comments from Anna, and I totally agree with her about getting a portrait lens. I've just got mine (yay!). Anna and her friends told me about it a long time ago and portrait lenses are a good investment.
Portrait lenses are one of the cheapest actually. And since you're a beginner, get one with auto-focus, unless your camera has it already.
To get a blurry background, you'll need a lens with a large aperture. The bigger the number, the smaller the aperture. f/1.8 is good enough.
The reason why portrait lenses are popular are:
1. Wonderful photo quality compared to other lenses
2. Large aperture
3. CHEAP CHEAP CHEAP!
I got a 50mm f/1.8 portrait lens for about RM400 (less than US$100).
You can see some the photos I took with it here:

Diya,
ReplyDeleteI would suggest you bring the camera anywhere. Play with it. Try it at home. It's not difficult. Try somewhat something like this at home with whatever objects.

If this image doesn't appear, Google for depth of field images.
I would suggest manual focus, because you'll be able to control your focus way better, but i know it's hard at first.
:)
Hi, hope you're doing fine, gorgeous outfit and awesome pics, simply amazing. Have fun, ciao!
ReplyDeleteLOVE the colour of the jacket! It's my favourite colour :)

Just looks like the ISO is too high...
ReplyDeletePHD... I had no idea, Diya! So ambitious. But hey, at least you're learning your limits and about yourself now before you get too ingrained in the program. I really wish I hadn't done a whole 8 years of night school to finish uni only to feel like the degree was completely out of line with what I want to do.
I guess it was in line with who I was when I was in school, though.
We're always changing.

Can't comment every post because I would be repetitive, but you're extremely cute and look amazing in those clothes they look like they have been made for you! : D
