Silence & Noise shorts, vintage blouse, london fog bag, forever 21 shoes
Outfit: I finally found the (almost) perfect shorts! The only complaint is that it's a wee-bit too short when it starts riding up, which shows the part of my thighs that I'm highly conscious about (see below paragraph). The vintage blouse was part of the two pieces of clothing I bought with my Moderepublic trendsetters gift certificate a while back. Due to a mailing address mix-up I just received it. Even though I didn't think it was a big deal, Lily from LoveCharles was SUPER sweet to include an extra Bill Blass blouse for the package's late arrival. Thanks Lily!
Personal: Last night, our plans to make it back to San Saba fell through so Tim and I went on our (now weekly) routine: go thrifting at Savers and then go pig out at Chili's. I can't think of a better way to spend the day with my favorite guy (other than my little brother, of course!) in the world. Thrifting always makes me feel better after a long stressed-out week. Other than the modeling rehearsal today, I'm going to be extremely domestic and finally clean my apartment. :)
Fashion vs. Body Image: I know many people have commented on how short the skirts/dresses are on my blog; please realize that 1. the angle at which the shots are done (from ground up) make the skirts appear shorter and 2. it's really not my fault that I can't seem to find mini skirts that are slightly longer due to my height(5'10") at an affordable price (f21/UO/topshop/asos), feel insanely self-conscious about how knee-length makes my calves look bigger, and never find maxi styles that are actually "maxi" on me. Me being curvy makes the dresses/skirts even shorter than on a slim person my height. Of course, I could technically learn to sew better and add hems or just learn to wear pants but I've always loved to be girly and I really don't have time to alter every single piece. When it comes to body image, I have a huge insecurity issue about my legs. My parents have always told me that my legs are too stubby/muscular for shorts and miniskirts (Asian parents...) and an ex boyfriend always relished in telling me how my legs are so muscular and that he prefers slender long legs. Of course, I'm a girl so obviously I'm going to harp on the most insignificant thing ever (calves! thighs!). Over the years I've tried to fight that insecurity about my legs by ignoring my parents and wearing lots of shorts and miniskirts and finally have sort of come to terms with my legs. I can't say I no longer complain about my thighs/calves or that I don't feel self conscious in the changing rooms. I do however now have a bf that loves my legs and a collection of short skirts that expose my "muscular" legs. Sorry for the long rant, I just feel like no one ever talks about their body image insecurities on fashion blogs due to how personal it is. However, that part of my psyche is definitely present when I play with clothes or look at myself in the mirror so I feel like I had to share. I've enjoyed reading your comments on the previous post about love/hate relationships with blogs, so I thought I'll ask: is there a specific body part you're more self-conscious or insecure about?

Hey, Thanks for talking about body image on your blog, it's a really good example for others not to be so self conscious about talking about their own insecurities. FIY, i've always really liked the way your legs look in photos and i don't think they're too muscular at.
ReplyDeleteI'm asian too so i get what you're talking about with the parents not to mention i used to be a swimmer so you havn't seen muscular until you've seen me. I've got shoulders like a linemane and thighs like the hulk but i relish in the fact that i can kick anyones ass who makes fun of the way i look :)
yinmei: my gosh your comment made me smile (and giggle. a lot) thank you for encouraging me to post. :)
ReplyDeleteAww...I know what you mean. I don't really like my legs. And always stare at them and pick out what's wrong instead of what's right. My bf always says I'm being ridiculous but it's just hard.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad to see a fashion blogger that's willing to blog about this stuffs [high five]
Yasmeen
don't worry about all the remarks upon your body. this is rude, from my point of view.from my point of view if you're a skinny chic, there's no challenge to dress up - as in everything you look at least pretty well. you have such feminine style and you seem to appreciate your curvy body, what is the most important aspect. besides, when it comes to height - i have the same problem, i am very tall, so the average maxi dresses are simply too short, hah.
ReplyDeletei forgot to mention that your outfit is fantastic. love the pants although they seem to be too short!
ReplyDeleteI think the length of shorts and skirts you wear really suits you-and if I had a figure as amazing as yours, I would definitely wear short skirts! Sorry to hear that people were being unkind, perhaps they are a little jealous?
ReplyDeleteFrom Carys of La Ville Inconnue
I love those shorts. You are a style queen!
ReplyDeleteAlso, thank you so much for discussing your insecurities with us. You're right, the fashion blogging world doesn't seem to want to talk about them too much. I personally think your legs are amazing and your skirts are wonderful. I would never have the courage to wear skirts like you do. I have way too many insecurities concerning my body (which is why I tend to only post editorial spreads on my blog).
Anyway, I love your blog to pieces. You're such a genius. :)
I love the shorts... <333
ReplyDeletethe shorts look absolutely adorable on you and i applaud you for wearing mini skirts and shorts despite your body insecurities. i totally know how you feel being, me being a curvy 5'11, in a house filled with skinny women who barely hit 5'3. i've learned that it's best to accept your body rather than comparing it to others :)
ReplyDeletethank you for sharing!
Haute Californian
I love that you have accepted your legs because I never have looked at your photos and thought they were too muscular! I think you always look lovely. Dont listen to haters, I just received a similar comment today on how a dress made my chest look (bad i guess?) but you have to understand that these comments are just from people who are jealous of the confidence you have in yourself.

First off I can't see why you ever had body-image issues...you look amazing. As for the ex boyfriend...good thing he's an ex.
ReplyDeleteAs for your outfit...love it :)...the shorts are perfect!!!
AMEN to girls with real sized thighs.I have similarly built thighs/body and the difference that curves and height makes one the length of clothing can be frustrating. I'm only 5'8" so I can't imagine how much worse it is for you. Props to you for rocking it! I wish I had the same amount of confidence.
ReplyDeleteGreat post! I am a firm believer that if you don't have something nice to say then don't say it at all. Blogs are such a fun way to explore and talk to people, not be rude or judgy. Love that you addressed this!
ReplyDeleteNaughty Baubles: even if I had megan fox's or marisa miller's body I'll still have something to criticize about myself... sigh. I hate how self-judgmental I am!
ReplyDeleteI'm not tal but a size 0 and short I find in my barely cover your @$$ or come down to my knees. There needs to be a happy medium somewhere in between.
ReplyDeleteYou are so beautiful, never let anyone make you feel otherwise! I'd kill to have long beautiful legs like yours. Who cares if others think your skirts are short, if you are comfy, that's what matters!
ReplyDeleteI totally know what you are talking about! I used to swim and play volleyball (now I just play volleyball) which made my shoulders super broad, so much that I didn't fit into my old t-shirts anymore, and gave me huge thighs and calves! And on top of that, I'm rather short too so my legs are super short. I too have asian parents so they always criticized me for being to 'manly', as they put it, because I was so muscular. But I was (and still am) hard headed and always did things my way. I mean we are real girls with meat on our bones! Curvy is sexy :) And if anyone disagreed, I would have to kick their ass. Take that ex-bf!
ReplyDeletelove,
-Y
I am seriously in love with those shorts. And thank you for talking about body image. We all have insecurities about our bodies, but no one ever talks about them. You are amazingly beautiful and a classy broad to boot!
ReplyDeletemy belly!
ReplyDeletei love the shorts!and your bag is love...nice outfit!
ReplyDeletei love your rant about your legs! I get the same kind of comments about my shorts because it bares a lot of legs although I'm only 5'3 =)
ReplyDeleteYou have the most amazing legs! To be so tall and have muscular legs are an asset!! Mine are too from years of tennis with my brothers. If they are your best features, why not show them off? Go you!
http://www.soyouwanna.blogspot.com/
There will always be something we won't like about our bodies. (And someone always willing to point it out!) I say just do it and forget about it. You look great Diya!
ReplyDeletehttp://austeresybarite.blogspot.com/
I'm self conscious about my thighs and my belly because they're a little jiggly but, oh well.
ReplyDeletehttp://the-not-so-secret-loves-of-bri.blogspot.com/
We all have body image issues and it's just about self acceptance. Good for you for putting yourself out there and talking about your image issues, but also accepting yourself and overcoming them.
ReplyDeleteYou just wear what you feel comfortable in! Don't focus on the negative comments; look at alll the positive feedback you're receiving :)
lovely and cool as usual gorgeous <3 super cool!!!
ReplyDeletelove,vdcouture
You're legs are the best part about your body! And mini skirts and shorts are totally oneo f your signature styles, I think. :)
ReplyDeleteWow, you look amazing. You really don't need to take to heart those negative words. You have amazing legs and have nothing to be ashamed of. You're gorgeous :)
ReplyDeleteyeah, my parents have also told me not to wear short-length shorts or miniskirt for other reasons. though, it wouldn't be a big issue if you get to like your whole figure. there are always people out there who give a mean comment on how short your skirt you are wearing is or anything like that. don't let them get in your head and make you feel bad. I think you have great confidence. you dress how you want in public without caring. I like that you don't actually dress what people like.
ReplyDeleteDiya!! I love those shorts. I think they look just fab on you. :)

Your legs are AMAZING, Diya!!! Forget those haters, you're free to wear whatever you wish!
ReplyDeleteYour outfit is gorgeous too, btw!!!
Hum... I'm self-conscious about my height, in general... I'm only 5'4... :( But I've learn to live with that and appreciate it! In my country women aren't that tall either, so that helps!!! ;)
http://myfashioninsider.blogspot.com/
awesome shorts!! before I know you're that tall, yeah your shorts and skirts looked short on you, but I always think that's the way they should be. you look really good in them. about your ex, a real man shouldn't say that to a woman. thank God you've found a waaay better man than him :)
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't worry about the remarks re. your legs if I were you. You have such confidence, a warm smile and personality to match. Those shorts are exquisite in their simplicity. Happy Sunday;-)
ReplyDeleteHahahaha, it's funny because I never really noticed your legs until you talked about them today. After reading this post I went back and diligently checked a few posts to see if your legs are actually stubby or not. And they ARE NOT. I don't know why people (parents, friends, boyfriends, commenters) may feel the need to comment on how imperfect in their opinion one of your body parts might be. I really don't understand. But I don't care either. You have a lovely figure Diya, unique to you. Never forget that.
ReplyDeleteLove from Toronto
I totally understand the issue you are having with your body image. I have the same problems. I have a butt, muscular thighs and I'm busty on top (hello D-cup). However I recently learned that I can't wear all the styles I see on these slender models with no curves to their body at all. Don't worry what people tell you. As long as you feel good in your outfit go for it! I will definitely be following your blog and I would appreciate it if you followed mine as well!

such a cute outfit! love the shorts. who cares how short you go? the shorter the better, in my book!
ReplyDeleteI love that bag!
ReplyDeletehttp://ooheyelikeit.blogspot.com/
I think your legs look great.
ReplyDeletePersonally I hate my knees and when I wear a short skirt (like today) I always wonder if i should have worn tights to hide them.
those are some awesome shorts!
ReplyDeleteLOVE LOVE LOVE this outfit.
ReplyDeleteyour top is lovely and those UO shorts are AMAZING and look so goood on you. I think I saw them online and did not think much of them, but now after seeing them on you.... I love em.

hey just started following your blog a month ago or so and it is nice to see a fellow austinite that loves to dress up. anyways I also have and love these shorts but just got the courage to wear them for the first time yesterday. They are super cute but super short (have you tried wearing them backwards...I know it sounds weird but the zipper actually looks great in the front too...I don't have much of a butt so this works for me) Actually its kinda funny cause I was basically wearing this same outfit yesterday...but anyways I like your style and your rant about fashion vs body image and I say go girl! I am also pretty tall, 5'9", and can be self conscience about my legs, height in heels, small breast, etc but that has never stopped me from rocking a low cut shirt, towering over others in 4" stilettos, and letting my checks hang out ever so slightly with fabulous shorts like these! So kudos to you for not letting body image stand in your way and for looking fabulous at the same time. Keep rocking it!
ReplyDeleteI think you have the sexiest figure possible girl! don't let anybody tell you different. good thing your ex is exactly that, ex.
ReplyDeleteyour outfits are always amazing!
Ohhh I love you so much more in this one!! The black blouse is so darn pretty that I'm going to cry for not having it. :P The shorts are the sex. So good. Thaaaat good. You look extra-chic in this one.
ReplyDeleteAnd your legs, so-called muscular ones, are my favourite part of your body too! (That didn't sound gay, did it? Heck! Who cares?!). Truly, you rock these short outfits much better than a skinny lifeless model. Kudos.
Eff to all the hate-blogs/comments if they are far from truth.
love your shorts!!

Hey Diya! You popular lady. Just wanted to say that A) I adore your avant-garde style, and can't get enough of those short shorts, and B) THOSE shorts in particular, paired with that grown-up woman blouse, are wonderful.
ReplyDeleteKeep doing yer thang!
Xo,
Tolly
You look lovely in that blouse!
ReplyDeleteI'm just going to email you about this.
ReplyDeleteXXs,
Mae Lu, thereafterish.
i've never commented a blog before but i HAVE to comment this. i love mostly everything about my body except my legs. being 5'4", i am uber selfconscious about my short, muscular legs. my parents always nag me into wearing shorter shoes because stilletos make my calves look too big, or wearing longer skirts because my thighs "don't look right when they're too exposed." (?!) i hope one day that i can find a guy who'll appreciate my fit figure instead of someone who overlooks me because i don't have supermodel legs. you're such an inspiration and those shortshorts are totally gorgeous on you. work it! xo
ReplyDeleteGirl rock on with your bad self! There is nothing wrong with your skirts/shorts/body. Wear what you like when you like as long as YOU like it! You're one of my gave personal style bloggers because your outfits include daring original looks. Don't apologize for being you!
ReplyDeletehttp://ooheyelikeit.blogspot.com/
I'm 5'8" and I started following your blog because i was so shocked at how similar your body is to mine! we definitely have different styles but the way you have a little bit of a curve and even taller than I am excited me. Even on the internet most bloggers (like models) are exceptionally thin!
ReplyDeleteI definitely don't consider your legs muscular! I would rather have muscular legs like yours than the slightly wobbly legs that I have. Even though I work out almost everyday I still seem to have more fat than muscle in my leg/hip area.
Diya - your legs are awesome, keep rocking what you do! :)
ReplyDeleteGood Lord, I just kept thinking how awesome your legs are--they have a great shape, and you're obviously muscular.
ReplyDeleteKeep rocking the short hems, girl.
:)
